No matter what platform or console you play Fifa on it is an enjoyable game, but there is something different about the Wii version.
Whilst in attendance at a Producer’s Day for Fifa 10 earlier this summer, it was clear from the images zipping across the screen during the main presentation that the Wii version was ‘different’ to the others.
The colours, the graphics, the gameplay – it all appeared to be slightly….well, emmm…..different. One thing is for sure, it is certainly distinctive. And it will be easy for gamers to pick it out amongst the other versions.
This might sound absurd, but it shares a lot of similarities to an arcade game. Remember those old arcade machines with players that looked more like characters from G.I. Joe than footballers? Well, it borrows some elements from those early attempts to make the ultimate football game.
Happily the graphics are not clunky or out-dated, but better than ever. The arcadish feel comes from the bright colour scheme, the ability to move players all over the pitch and not just have them restricted to specific running lines, and the big goals.
Let’s face it, everyone loves scoring goals. It is what makes the game most enjoyable, but there is something special about hitting the back of the net when you play Fifa 10 on the Wii. This is because of the introduction of ‘Wow moments’.
In an effort to maximise the dramatic moments in the game, the producers have designed a new tool that allows the gamer to get even more out of each goal.
Of course, you have to learn how to master this technique, but once you do then it will be something that you use on a consistent basis. What basically happens is that the game adopts a Matrix-kind of surreal camera view to zoom in from a different angle just before your player is about to bury the ball past the opposition keeper.
This can also work when producing a crunching slide tackle and it looks really cool when it happens. The thinking behind these ‘wow moments’ is to increase the tension of each major play, but also to make Fifa that bit more enjoyable to play on the Wii.
Another big addition to the Wii version for Fifa 10 is the 2.v.2 online option. This should help to create more of an online buzz as more gamers are able to play at the same time.
With it being a lot more interactive, the general animation now carrying a smoother feel, the gameplay being more responsive, and having an increased number of options to explore, this is by far the best football game yet to be made for the Wii.
Make sure to check back with this blog for an insight into what the other versions of Fifa 10 on the PC, PS3, PSP, and NDS are like and what new additions are on the way.
